Job Description

The CRE is responsible for the administration of the specified areas of the religious education program in fulfillment of the catechetical mission of the parish. The CRE consults regularly with his/her supervisor to ensure that a viable program is being maintained. Full time employment averages 40 hours per week, including evening and weekend hours. Actual hours spent each week will vary with the tasks at hand. Time constraints and parishioner response will determine the degree to which each responsibility is undertaken and accomplished.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Has advanced level certification, Commissioned Ministry, or B.A./B.S. degree in appropriate field.
2. Has background in scripture, Catholic theology, and spirituality, and psychology/methods.
3. Is competent in catechetical methods and basic program development.
4. Exhibits skills in interpersonal communication, collaborative ministry, and public speaking.

Preferred Background or Characteristics

1. Lives in full sacramental communion with the Catholic Church.
2. Is dedicated to the ministry of catechesis.
3. Has experience working with groups of people in a leadership role.
4. Pursues continuing education opportunities.

Ministry Responsibilities

I. Ongoing Development

Spiritual

1. Cultivates an active personal prayer life.
2. Participates in the sacraments and other forms of community prayer.
3. Seeks spiritual formation opportunities, such as, retreats and days of reflection.

Professional

1. Attends workshops and inservices.
2. Fulfills required certification and renewal.
3. Pursues continuing education (e.g. undergraduate/graduate credits, audits, CEU’s).
4. Schedules time for professional reading (e.g. diocesan newspaper, books, and journals).
5. Participates in the diocesan organization for religious education administrators
   (GB-AREA).

Personal

• Strives to maintain social, emotional, and physical health.
• Incorporates an adequate amount of family time and leisure time into each work week.

II. Administration

Programs

1. Collaboratively develops and maintains a sequential religious education process with appropriate materials for each stage of faith development.
2. Evaluates the program to determine strengths, areas for improvement and future needs.
3. Establishes the program calendar.
4. Cooperates with parish personnel and parishioner groups in the use of parish facilities.
5. Provides appropriate environments for catechetical and spiritual growth.
6. Ensures proper supervision of indoor and outdoor facilities during program times.
7. Assists in preparing and monitoring of the program budget, including collection of tuition and fees.
8. Keeps an inventory of resources.
9. Orders textbooks and other needed resources and supplies.
10. Oversees the registration process.
11. Invites inactive families to fuller participation.
12. Maintains parish and diocesan catechetical records.
    m. Develops disciplinary procedures based on justice, charity and compassion.

Personnel

1. Coordinates the recruitment and retention of catechists/volunteers.
2. Supervises, evaluates, affirms and, when necessary, releases catechetical personnel along with DRE.
3. Confers at least once a year with each catechist on ministry profile, performance, support needed and related issues.
4. Promotes diocesan catechist certification and maintains catechist certification records.

III. Catechesis

 Catechists and Religious Education Staff

1. Arranges catechist in-services in theology, scripture, spirituality, and methodology and faith formation.
   b. Promotes ongoing development opportunities for support staff.
2. Trains catechists to do lesson planning.
3. Informs the staff and catechists of available supplemental resources.
4. Plans occasions to build faith community among those in the catechetical program.
5. Religious Education of Parents/Other Adults
6. Designs faith formation activities and informational/instructional meetings.
7. Assists parents in their role as the primary influence on their children’s faith formation.
8. Coordinates parental involvement in the sacramental programs.
9. Supports the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults.

Religious Education of Children and Youth

1. Integrates faith experiences, service and instruction.
2. Coordinates the designated sacramental programs.
3. Works with the Pastoral Team and Worship Committee in planning worship experiences.
4. Supports youth and family ministry.
5. Informs and involves parents in the pogrom via orientation and other parent sessions, written communications, phone calls, etc.
6. Stays abreast of current trends in catechesis.

Parish and Diocesan Leadership

1. Participates as an active member of the Pastoral Team.
2. Attends parish Pastoral Council meetings when necessary.
3. Assists the Pastoral Team and Education Board in identifying the needs and establishing the vision, goals, objectives, and strategies for the overall religious education program.
4. Acts as a resource person to parish organizations.
5. Implements parish and diocesan religious education and formation policies and guidelines.
6. Promotes faith building experiences within parish groups and programs.
7. Communicates with diocesan religious education personnel and neighboring catechetical leaders in areas of mutual interest or concern.
8. Collaborates with area parishes in promoting and providing faith-building experiences.
9. Attends diocesan meetings and workshops, as appropriate.
10. Serves on regional, diocesan, and/or state committee and organizations, as appropriate.

Public Relations

1. Furthers the understanding of the central role of catechesis in the life of the parish.
2. Communicates regularly with the Pastoral Team and Education Board on program matters.
3. Collaborates with members of the Pastoral Team in common ministerial areas.
4. Promotes programs, policies, and events using print media, such as bulletin notices, mailings, newsletters, a handbook, and diocesan and local newspapers.
5. Coordinates the schedule with local school and community calendars.
