Job Description

The position of Sentinel Managing Editor exists to produce a high-quality, bi-weekly newspaper, in addition to a daily-updated website, an additional monthly Spanish-language newspaper and website, and an annual statewide Catholic Directory. The Managing Editor is responsible for everything that is printed in the newspapers and put up on the websites and social media portals. The message is guided by the Archbishop and his key staff. The purpose is to provide important and interesting information to readers covering events and topics that are relevant in the local, regional, and national church. Managing Editor will have oversight of all news stories, advertisements, photographs, editorials and opinion pieces; ensuring that they are professional, objective, balanced and thought-provoking.

Essential Duties

• Set the forward-looking direction and tone of the newspapers and websites
• Manage Sentinel and El Centinela staff (including all editorial and advertising positions)
• Manage and guide performance of staff and ensure necessary training, coaching, and development
• Make assignments, follow-up on leads, and provide oversight of writing, copy-editing, layout, advertising, and circulation
• Determine featured content for print and web publications (and contribute as necessary)
• Develop and maintain trusting relationship with Archbishop and his liaisons to OCP
• Determine size and placement of Catholic News Service stories (subsidiary of the U.S. Catholic bishops)
• Select and edit maximum number of news service daily report stories for inclusion in print issue and online
• Effectively utilize social media to increase and reinforce connection with audience, providing them relevant and timely information, and directing them to our website(s)
• Facilitate good relationships and communication with production and IT staff (who support getting our materials printed and digitalized)
• Cultivate and maintain good relations with the priests and pastors, parish staffers and readers
• Prepare and manage department annual budget

Education Requirements

• Requires Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or minimum of two years college education plus five years’ experience as a journalist.

Job Experience Requirements

• Minimum of five years’ experience as editor for a quality weekly or monthly publication is a must (includes experience with newspaper layout)
• Must have managerial experience (preferably in newspaper publishing, including managing advertising sales)
• Experience editing Websites

Specialized Skills

• Must be a proven, competent, respected journalist
• Must possess solid understanding and knowledge of the Catholic Church
• Must be able to delegate tasks as necessary to promote teamwork and facilitate timely completion of work.
• Must be able to represent the newspaper at executive committee meetings and in meetings with pastors and related Catholic organizations
• Must possess good organizational/time management skills
• Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills
• Must be competent in use of computer, software programs, and Internet (including social media) to effectively achieve goals of position

Additional Skills Desired

• Business background preferred, including preparing and managing a million dollar-plus budget
• Fluency in Spanish preferred
